You Are Light

A poem written during winter while remembering summer

You are the first sheet of gold
Bursting through the window
Throwing yourself across the bed
And brightening the room
With the early-morning smile
That only I get to see

You are the twinkles
In the running water
Like the twinkle
In a lover’s eyes
During a casual
Afternoon river float

You are the cotton-candy clouds
Above the western skyline
Blowing kisses and
Bidding farewell
As the sun tucks away
Behind pine-crested hills

You are the diamonds
Strewn across
The velvety night’s sky
Precious, more than anything
Man could pull
Or make by hand

You are
The energy of Spring
The heat of Summer
The colors of Fall

And during the painful, enduring winter
Whose chilly bite left teeth marks
You are the one perfect day
With clear blue skies
That broke up the dreariness
And brought hope for tomorrow

You are light
And I love you
